Vodacom, Neotel deal faces opposition

Vodacom’s proposed R5bn (US$502m) deal to acquire South African fixed line operator Neotel from India’s Tata Communications has attracted opposition from Wireless Access Providers’ Association (Wapa), which said it is “strongly opposed” to the buyout. WAPA said in a press statement that it believes that the acquisition would stifle competition, lead to job cuts, and do little to reduce the digital divide.
